New Viette Hybrid Daylily Named
A new daylily hybridized by Andre Viette and the rights to name it were recently auctioned off at a silent auction organized to raise money for the Orange (Virginia) Boys & Girls Club.
"This one-of-a-kind daylily with naming rights was a huge success at the auction," said Mary Hintermann, one of the organizers for the charity event. "It brought in the second highest amount in our auction. We are very pleased and excited – but the real winners are the kids!"
The winner of this one-of-a-kind daylily received the right to name it and be listed as the co-registrant with Andre Viette on the Daylily Registry of the American Hemerocallis Society. The winner also received 2 divisions of the original clump.
It's a Gift That Keeps on Giving!
The original daylily clump was purchased with the stipulation that, except for two divisions which would go to the winner of the auction, Viette's would plant the remaining divisions in their stock beds and grow them for commercial sales under the name chosen by the winner. Viette's will donate 50% of the purchase price of any divisions of this daylily sold in 2011 and 2012 to the Orange Boys and Girls Club. We anticipate that there will be about 4 divisions available for sale in 2011 and 10 or more available in 2012.
The winner has chosen to name the daylily in honor of a dear friend, Renee Ring, a former board member of the Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing, NY and who, together with her husband, Paul Zofnass, created the Westchester Wilderness Walk in Pound Ridge, NY where these daylilies will be planted! The daylily is named 'Viette's Renee Ring'.
Mary is overjoyed with the success they had with the "Name Your Own Viette Daylily" in their benefit auction and finds it "fun" that this beautiful daylily will be named in honor of someone who is not only very involved with gardening but is also a true friend of the environment!
