Colorful Perennials for the Fall Garden
Extend your gardening season
Now that the hot scorching summer days are almost over, it's time to enjoy the garden again. Go out and take a look at your garden - are the blooms fading away? Is the cheerful color of summer disappearing? Maybe your garden needs a face lift! Now's the time to add some fall dazzle!
For your sunny area, the golden petals and deep brown centers of the Rudbeckia varieties give you rich, earthy color through the month of October. Add some of the Echinacea cultivars for large, vibrant splashes of purple-red ('Magnus', 'Kim's Knee High'), orange ('Big Sky Harvest Moon'), yellow ('Big Sky Sunrise'), and white ('White Swan'). Then there are the many varieties of our old favorites, the Asters, in their vivid purples, pinks, and blues; the Sedums, with their large, handsome blooms and interesting succulent foliage; the beautiful blue-gray, aromatic foliage of Perovskia with its graceful spikes of silvery-blue flowers; and the beautiful cobalt blue blooms and contrasting red fall foliage of Ceratostigma (Plumbago).
The Garden Showpiece
If you need a large "centerpiece", consider the spectacular Hibiscus with its huge flowers. We have some wonderful new varieties at the farm, like Hibiscus moscheutos 'Vintage Carafe Bordeaux', 'Vintage Carafe Chablis', and 'Vintage Carafe Grenache'. Also try the beautiful Hibiscus 'Kopper King' with its stunning burgundy/copper colored foliage and the most striking white flowers with deep red centers. The butterfly bush, Buddleia davidii, provides another wonderful focal point for the fall garden. Its blooms, in many shades of purple, pink, and white, will continue from July to frost attracting flocks of beautiful butterflies.
Fall Color for the Shade
For the shade garden, you must try Anemone japonica! What a wonderful late blooming perennial to compliment your Hosta, Astilbe, and other shade loving favorites.
Don't forget the perennials which have such colorful foliage that they know no one season. Enhance the border garden with the beautiful red foliage of Heuchera 'Hollywood' or Heuchera 'Palace Purple', or the striking peach colored foliage of Heuchera 'Caramel'. The silvery Artemisias add a softness to the stronger colors of Asters, Echinaceas, and other perennials. The beautiful dwarf shrub, Spiraea 'Gold Flame', turns from fiery gold in spring to a dazzling red, copper, and orange in the fall
The beautiful ornamental grasses are fabulous in fall and come in all sizes, from the tall Miscanthus to the shorter Pennisetum, and in all colors, from different shades of green to the blue Elymus to the blood red Imperata!
